“Before having kids, I was always self-conscious and definitely carried more weight than I should have.

“I managed to lose some weight before my marriage in 2010, but fell into bad eating habits and couldn’t exercise much due to my office job.

“That’s when I started working out at home and lost a lot of weight. I became slim, but I didn’t feel strong or look shapely.

“I decided to join Nikki Ellis and that’s when my body and more importantly the way I felt about myself completely changed.”

“It’s magical to see women training together in a group. I loved it so much that I trained to become a PT myself.”

“I have put a lot of hard work and effort into my health, nutrition and fitness and it has paid off. “People think I look 10 years younger than my actual age.

“I’ll be 40 this year and I feel like I’m in better shape than I was in my 20s.

“I feel confident, strong and capable, and I continue to set personal bests every year.”

“The most important thing is that I’m a role model for my two young daughters about how important it is to exercise consistently, to get really strong, and to have a great group of women who all support each other to do that.”

Amanda struggled with severe pain throughout her teenage years, which she later learned was a condition called endometriosis, where the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus.

This condition is often overlooked or misdiagnosed.

For this pain, the doctor suggested her to take contraceptive pills, but this created many big problems.

Three months after starting the pill, just before her 18th birthday, Amanda developed a condition called deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in her left leg.

This was unusual, so after doing some tests it was discovered that she was suffering from three major blood clotting disorders, known as lupus anticoagulant, antiphospholipid syndrome and prothrombin gene mutation.

She was told she would have to take blood thinners forever, but after losing weight and taking control of her health, she was able to get off the medication; a major accomplishment that even surprised her doctor.

“As a teenager, I had to spend many nights in the hospital on morphine to deal with the pain of my undiagnosed endometriosis,” she said.

“When I was in Class 12, my doctor advised me to continue taking contraceptive pills to deal with the pain while I completed my studies.

“Three months later I developed DVT in my left leg, which started at my ankle and spread to 11cm [about 4.3 inches] Above my knee.

“That’s when I found out I had a blood clotting problem. I was put on blood thinners and told I would have to take the same medication for the rest of my life.

“But since I lost weight and started strength training, I’ve been able to get rid of them permanently. My doctors have never seen anything like it before.

“This is the most important part of my transformation. Health is everything.”
