Chargers’ Brandon Rice: Dad Jerry Rice wants me to prove teams wrong

Chargers rookie wide receiver Brandon Rice was disappointed when he wasn’t drafted until the seventh round, but someone else was even more disappointed than him: Jerry Rice, Brandon’s father, who is considered the greatest wide receiver in NFL history.

Brandon said at the Chargers’ rookie minicamp that he found it “very disappointing” to be held until the seventh round, but his father was even more upset.

“My father was charming, my father was charming,” he said. “The first words he said were, ‘It’s time to go to work, I’ll be with you every step of the way, from now on I’ll be in all your workouts, we’ve got a lot of people to prove wrong. ‘ ,

Brandon said that Jerry had told him that the rest of the players in the league would regret his departure.

“He’s like, ‘Oh no, we’re taking it to a different level. These guys are going to feel us,'” Brandon Rice said.

Brandon said he watches film of his father all the time but thinks he is different as an athlete and doesn’t necessarily want to model his game after his father. But he was aware that Jerry had received some criticism for not being ready for the NFL early in his career and said he hoped he could be a better rookie than his father.

“I heard he didn’t have a good rookie season in the NFL,” Brandon said of Jerry. “I have to get on top of that.”
