Detroit sees first population increase since 1957

detroit – Detroit’s population increased for the first time in 66 years, according to new Census Bureau projections for 2023, which Mayor Mike Duggan called a “day of celebration” for Michigan’s largest city.

Detroit grew by 1,852 people from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023, bringing the city’s population to 633,218, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday. This is the first time the city’s population has increased year over year since 1957, Duggan said.

“When I started in 2014, the goal of our administration was to drive growth,” Duggan told The Detroit News. “It took 10 years, but we’re here. It’s a day to celebrate.”
