The 14-party alliance led by the ruling Awami League today announced that they have unanimously agreed to ban Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in the country.
The decision was taken at a coalition meeting chaired by AL president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her residence Ganabhaban, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters after the meeting.
“The alliance has agreed to ban the politics of Jamaat-Shibir as it is accused of killing civilians and destroying state property by creating various issues and carrying out terror attacks,” Qadar said.
He said that the government will implement this decision soon.
Rashid Khan Menon, the central leader of the alliance and president of the Workers Party, told Business Standard that their decision was unanimous and it was now the responsibility of the government to implement it.
Menon said the Jamaat’s registration as a political party has already been cancelled. “Now the Home Ministry will issue a notification under executive power, just like other militant organisations have been banned.”
Bangladesh Tariqat Federation president Syed Najibul Bashar Maizbhandari said once Jamaat-Shibir is banned, they will be unable to hold press conferences or any other political events.
Other central leaders of the alliance, including Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president Hasanul Haque Inu, were also present at the meeting.
‘Terrorist activities’
In the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina termed the recent incidents related to the quota reform movement as extremist activities and blamed Jamaat-Shibir and BNP for these attacks.
He said, “The incidents happening in Bangladesh are not political but extremist activities.”
Regarding the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, the platform of the quota reform movement, Sheikh Hasina said their intentions extend far beyond the quota issue.
He said the forum aims to dismantle the institutions that improve the quality of life in Bangladesh, and effectively target the country’s progress.
Highlighting the progress achieved by Bangladesh, the Prime Minister said, “Today, Bangladesh has earned a place of respect in the world through socio-economic and infrastructure development. When the name of Bangladesh is heard, everyone smiles and looks with respect.”
