Teen killed in firing on police officer

The sobs of a grieving mother could be heard at a press conference at Utica City Hall on Saturday morning detailing the shooting death of a 13-year-old member of the Karen community by an officer on Friday night.

What had started as a din turned into a chorus of screams as Utica Mayor Michael Galim spoke with the 13-year-old boy’s mother and family through an interpreter.

According to the mayor, Saturday’s press conference was originally intended for members of the press but was opened to the general public due to the large turnout.

“We called this press conference not only to clarify and be completely transparent, but also to express our condolences to the family and the community for their loss,” Galim said. “While what happened yesterday evening was a normal thing, in a matter of moments it became tragic. We understand that and we are here to be completely transparent and to let the community know everything about the incident and the process that follows.”
