CROMWELL, Conn. — Cameron Young holed a par putt from inside 10 feet to shoot 11-under 59 on Saturday at the Travelers Championship, the first sub-60 round on the PGA Tour in nearly four years.
Young made two eagles on the par 4s, holed out with a wedge from 142 yards on the third hole and got to within 4 feet on the 280-yard 15th.
It was the 13th sub-60 round since Al Geiberger first achieved golf’s “magic number” at the 1977 Memphis Classic. Scottie Scheffler was the most recent player to do it at TPC Boston in 2020 at the Northern Trust.
That also denied Young the distinction of setting the course record at TPC River Highlands. Jim Furyk shot 58 at the Travelers Championship in 2016, the lowest score in PGA Tour history.
Young was able to pick up, clean and place his golf ball in the short grass due to the wet field conditions and the possibility of more rain.
He could have gone even lower. After an eagle on the 15th hole, Young hit his tee shot on the par-3 16th to 7 feet and missed a short birdie putt. On the closing hole, needing a birdie to tie Furyk’s record, Young’s drive stopped short on the steep surface of a fairway bunker, and he couldn’t get it onto the green.
He made par putts for the seventh round of 59 or less on tours around the world this year, tying the 59 set by Joaquin Niemann in the LIV Golf League and the 57 set by Cristobal del Solar on the Korn Ferry Tour in Bogota, Colombia.
