Huge crowd loots Oakland gas station after car smashes through windshield

A large mob of people looted the 76 gas station near the Oakland Airport early Friday morning, the gas station owner said. KTLA sister station KRON,

The owner of 76, who gave his name as Sam, said about 40 to 50 people entered the market attached to the gas station at about 4:30 a.m.

Security footage from the gas station shows increasingly larger numbers of people wandering around the store and occupying store property.

Sam said in an interview that some people smashed the glass of the petrol station market with their car. He said that people picked up whatever they could find and destroyed the rest.

When the owner called the Oakland Police Department after arriving at 76, he was reportedly told to “file a report online.” The owner then tried to contact OPD Police Chief Floyd Mitchell, but was told he would have to make an appointment.

OPD said officers responded to a disturbance call involving more than 100 vehicles on Hegenberger Road near the airport around 4:30 a.m. About 90 minutes later, police received a call about a robbery in progress.

OPD said the call was made after the suspects had left the scene, so the owner was asked to file a report online.

“The video evidence was later reported to OPD, which made the scale and details of the incident clear, including the large number of suspects, and the incident was immediately upgraded to a Priority 1 incident, which prompted an officer to travel to the scene to make contact with the owner, and investigators are now reviewing evidence and working directly with the gas station owner,” OPD said.

The next morning, Sam said workers were there to clean up the market.
