Live updates: Biden drops out of 2024 presidential race, endorses Kamala Harris

Donald Trump was joined by his running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, on Saturday at the former president’s first campaign rally since his assassination attempt last weekend.

The two were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd at an indoor arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

What happened was that:

New partners: “To be honest, it’s still a little weird to see my name on those signs,” said Vance, who pumped up the crowd before Trump’s speech, referring to the Trump-Vance campaign materials waving behind him in the audience.

Vice President Vance defends his loyalty to the United States Kamala Harris said He will “remain loyal only to Trump, not to our country.”

Before becoming vice president, Harris was the district attorney of San Francisco, attorney general of California, and then the state’s junior senator.

Vance later returned and introduced Trump to the booing crowd.

On Rally Shootout: Trump, who wore a small, beige bandage on his ear, said he “took a bullet for democracy.”

The former president spoke for nearly two hours, thanking the staff at Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was taken just minutes after the shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Former White House physician Ronny Jackson said Saturday that Trump was “recovering as expected” from a bullet wound in his ear. Investigations into the shooter at the rally and the security staff at the event are ongoing.

Trump, in his first joint interview with Vance, said people at his rally last weekend saw someone on the roof before the assassination attempt.

Musk’s support: Trump said he spoke with tech billionaire Elon Musk before appearing at the Grand Rapids rally. The former president said Musk did not mention a Wall Street Journal report that he was going to give about $45 million a month to a pro-Trump super PAC.

About World Leaders: Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders wrote to him after the assassination attempt. He said he has a “very good relationship with President Xi, who’s a great guy,” and claimed he worked well with other world leaders, even though they understood during his presidency that the “game is over” in terms of leveraging the US on the world stage.

Biden campaign response: President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign criticized Trump’s comments at the rally, saying Trump was “only focused on himself.”

“He’s spreading the same lies, running the same campaign of revenge and retribution, promoting the same failed policies, and — as always — focusing only on himself. The only unity we saw today was between Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and his Project 2025 agenda,” Biden campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa said in a statement.

Project 2025 refers to a policy blueprint drawn up by a conservative think tank. Democrats have embraced some of the document’s controversial right-wing proposals, while Trump has tried to distance himself from the platform, even though dozens of people from his former administration had a hand in its creation.
