July’s full moon, known as the Buck Moon, arrives Sunday morning.
Here are things to know about the latest full moon.
When is the full moon in July 2024?
According to Buck Moon, the arrival will be on July 21, 2024 at 6:19 am. Farmers’ AlmanacThe name of this month’s full moon refers to the time of year when male deer grow antlers. Adult male deer grow antlers that fall off every winter and grow back every summer.
According to NASA, a full moon occurs when the moon is opposite the sun, causing the near side of the moon to be fully illuminated. The full moon in July is also known as the Squash R Rip Moon by the Algonquin, the Moon of the Young Corn by the Potawatomi, and the Raspberry Moon by the Anishnaabe.
The full lunar cycle, which includes all phases from new moon to full moon, lasts 29.5 days.

- Animals in the deer family – deer, elk, moose – grow horns, which are made of bone and fall off every year. This is different from horns, which are on bovine animals such as cows, goats and sheep.
- Antler growth is the fastest in the world, with adult white-tailed deer antlers growing up to ¼ inch per day.
- While antlers are useful during the fall breeding season, deer drop them in the winter. This can cause a considerable difference in weight, as a doe’s antlers can weigh anywhere from 3 to 9 pounds, with healthy deer antlers being heavier.

When is the next full moon of 2024?
The next full moon will be on Monday, August 19, 2024. It is known as the Sturgeon Moon, as this is the time of year when fishing is plentiful, including lake sturgeon.
How to photograph the moon?
Whether you’re using a top-of-the-line DSLR or the smartphone in your pocket, it’s possible to take a good photo of the moon. Keeping your camera steady through the use of a tripod or similar stabilization is key to getting a good shot at long exposures.
A better lens will capture better detail on craters and other details on the moon’s surface. Whichever camera you use, keeping your ISO low and aperture wide while shooting with a low shutter speed will help you get a proper exposure of the moon.
